Wilco

So they aren't exactly a new band but I've been getting into them lately. A Ghost is Born and Summerteeth are getting some heavy play these days! It took me a long time to get into Wilco - it's weird how some of the bands that have become my favorites took a while to appeal to me. I think this latest round of Wilco play was inspired by an episode of Austin City Limits on PBS - it was actually an episode of the Drive By Truckers...where I caught the last song. That prompted me to find the entire episode online which in turn enticed me to watch the Wilco episode. Both the DBT and Wilco episodes are worth watching here's a link to the Austin City Limits site.
On Summerteeth 'ELT' and 'Nothing'severgonnastandinmyway' are getting played a lot. On A Ghost is Born- 'Handshake Drugs'  'Company In My Back' and 'Theologians' are proving to be favorites.

Justin Townes Earle and The Cowlicks

Can't stop listening to this guy! Been listening to his latest release-  Midnight at the Movies. Maybe a bit more country than I usually like but I'm hooked. I could play "Can't hardly wait" (a wonderful cover of the Replacements song) on repeat for a long time - beautiful use of the mandolin!

I stumbled upon another possible gem today which I'll be doing some more digging on - 'The Cowlicks' an Alt country band out of the SF bay area. They are described as "If  Hank Williams and Tom Petty met, got trashed and ended up jammin, it might have come out like this!" -Brad Kava San Jose Mercury News. I caught a song of theirs while listening to Slacker radio - sounds like my kind of thing!

About Alt-Cntry

For a long time I've had a liking for a style of music that I didn't know the name of. It's falls somewhere between Rock and Country. The genre is known as Alternative Country or Alt-Country. It's a genre that has had a few successful bands but none that have had a lasting presence in main-stream radio.

I'm still discovering Alt-Country and this blog is intended to share my discoveries with you. There are several good blogs and web sites about Alt-Country but it's such a broad genre that I haven't found a source that suits my specific likes. That where this blog comes in- it's the songs and bands that I find that I like.

Hopefully by sharing my discoveries you'll make some discoveries of your own....
